Cobá is the second most important archaeological site in Tulum and one of the most visited. It is located approximately one hour from the center of Tulum. Some hieroglyphs found on stelae at the site affirm that Cobá was the original name of the city. One of the possible meanings given its proximity to the lagoons, is that of “chopped water”.
This city developed near five lakes which helped its development. One of its historical relevance is that it was connected by extensive roads, known in the Mayan language as sacbé (white road). It is said that the longest of them connects with 100 km, reaching the site of Yaxuná, very close to Chichén Itzá.
The tour in Cobá is very extensive and depending on how you choose to do it, it can take from 2 to 4 hours. There are several temples and the main pyramid distributed in 3 areas. As we said before, this place is characterized by having long paths between each of these. We recommend you rent a bicycle or hire the tricycle service, which a person is in charge of taking you from zone to zone. The ideal is to visit the place before noon since the heat and the sun for the little ones becomes complicated.
The place has toilets, parking and a store at the beginning of the route. Keep this in mind so that you bring enough water, snacks, mosquito repellent and sunscreen. On Sundays the entry is free for all nationals. If you go during the week the entrance fee is from $90 pesos. There is no restaurant within the area but in the surroundings.
We remind you that at KIDSin we highly value your recommendations and opinions, so we ask you to leave them below. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and water for the little ones. If you have already been to Cobá and want to know more archaeological sites in Quintana Roo enter our Parks in Tulum section.
